Brown Tissue

Postby fishchef » Fri Jun 26, 2009 5:42 pm

I have a very bright blue crocea. Its about 6 inches, at a depth of 15 inches under 3-15K 36" Giesmann HO T-5 with an actinic also. This has been the set-up for the past 4+ months. All seemed great. Today I noticed a central edge of the mantel was brown and seemed to be falling off. An area of indentation of about a cm across and now that the lights are down the area seems to be gone since I can see some shell edge that's usually covered by the mantel. The mantel is still evenly extended slightly as is usual with only the moon lights on. I'm a bit new to clams, but have been in the reef hobby for 7 years and saltwater since '91. I would certainly appreciate any advice.

Fishchef can you post some photos of what you are talking about? Has the clam been injured recently?

Well, the brown tissue is gone. However there is a smooth indented area where it was. The clam looks great, mantel fully extended, and very bright color. Not much else to tell. If I hadn't seen the dead tissue probably would have not even thought there was a problem. The only thing noticeable is the fact that there is an area of less mantel which causes an uneven appearance when it closes. Thanks for the response.

Glad its still looking great. Its really hard to say what it could have been without actually seeing it. If the clam starts looking funky snap some pics and post them up.

I've noticed a curious thing. This paticular clam is up on some live rock and originally seemed to move quite a bit. It has tucked itself next to some tall button polyps. Can these polyps harm the mantel ? I would think it would react to these if it was causing harm.

The polyps shouldnt bother it at all. Just watch that if the polyps start to grow on the shell that that dont start to over shadow the clam.

Thanks, when you read about toxic reactions it makes you wonder. I hate to move the clam since they seem to want to find a good spot, probably attached by now. I've seen some pics and the clams are surrounded by mushrooms, etc. I do have some fuzzy mushrooms that seem to be moving in on the clam.
