Ken's 12 gallon Nano

Postby fishfarm » Fri Jun 12, 2009 11:39 am

This is my 12 gallon Nano, Set up the first weekend of March, I won it at a fish workshop I attend in Raliegh each year, I do the auctioneering for them in exchange for vendor space to sell fish, a local coral vendor gave me enough salt to get it started and some coral frags and after a 9 hour drive I set it up around 2 am, put ten frags in it and went to bed expecting everything to be dead the next day. I used a 20 year old dip style hydrometer I dug out of an old juck box of Aquarium stuff, the float stuck, but did mange to get the salinity close to right, Went to the LFS the next day picked up more salt, a new hydrometer, live sand and some live rock, got the paremeters right, I only lost one soft coral and one SPS frag. I have since packed the tank with the most live rock it would hold including the sump in the back. Filtration is just the sponge it comes with, a bag of matrix rocks, a bag or purigen and a bag of scientific grade carbon, a chamber of live rock and the power head return, Lights are 54 watts of PC , one duel 10,000K and duel actinic and moon lights. I am amazed at the way this tank thrives, I did weekly 40-50% water changes for the first month and now do them every 2-3 weeks, Everyhting is growing and thriving, I feed newly hatched BBS, Feeding Frenzy and Cyclops eze on a roating schedule every 2 days and dose alkalinity about every 3 days and calcium every 7-10 days as needed. Only problem I have had is with the huge torch, it was an original piece given to me on day one that has grown way to much and keeps stinging smaller pieces and either burning them or killing them outright, I think it may have to go to a friends 120 gallon soon, I have it up in a cornor now where it can't touch anything, everyting that it had touched before is recovering and growing again. I like it, but with the way this tank is crowded I don't have room for it any more. I will be setting up 3-4 more tanks soon from 55 to 110 gallons to spread this stuff out into as it grows, I have the tanks and filters, just need lights. Watching Craig's list for those at a good price.

Very nice Ken. Hard to believe this tank is so young.

How about just fragging a piece of the torch off and keep it that and watching it regrow and trading in the rest? I always like getting small stuff and watching what it turns into
