My Pyramid snail infested clams and my QT tank.

Postby skinz78 » Thu Jul 23, 2009 11:09 pm

I recently got a few clams from an online vendor and they unfortunatly came infested with Pyramid snails. I have them in a QT tank and have been using this method for removing the snails. This sucks :banghead:

I tried to get a clear pic of the snails and this is the best I could get, sorry. You can kind of see the little white spots on the clam shell.

These are the two patients. You can see a Bristle worm bugging the little maxima.

It is a shame about these clams, they are beauties. I am hoping I win the battle with them. Some pic's to show them off.

This one may be photo contest worthy?

And this is a full QT shot, all the QT consists of is a 20g tank, a 24" 4 bulb Nova Extreme T5 fixture, a 50 watt heater, a Maxi Jet 1200, a Aqua C Remora Pro, and a little live rock and sand.

I hope you win too. I can't see the pics because the computer I'm at won't allow it, but I'll imagine they're really cool looking.

Good luck

Skinz, fill up a Tupperware container with sand and place the clams in that. Every time you remove the clams to scrub them empty all the sand out and refill with new clean sand. The snails will hide in the sand just below the clam so if you dont clean the sand also adults will climb back up and lay eggs again.

Yes, they refunded my money, and told me to do a 1 min FWD followed with a tooth brush scrub daily. My opinion is that the only thing that the FWD daily is going to do is stress the clam.

They also told me that they were going to look into the problem on their end. From the looks of things they must have thought their clams are fine.

In all fairness these snails are not easy to see and the egg sacks are clear and you wont see them unless your looking for them.

It sucks that you have to deal with them but this is why everything you get should be QTed before going into your system

yep, that is why I kept the 12g going for a few extra days after being emptied of all other life. I knew I had snails in my regular QT

chris: you wrote,

2 questions:
1how long a q time do you recommend
2how long would it take for a pyramid infected clam to show symptoms, assuming no snails were spotted during quarantine, but were really there? or assuming that no q was performed?
maybe that's 3 questions
lots of luck with them skinz!!
wish i knew what i don't know

Most quarantines should last at least 2 weeks and sometimes up to a month.

If you have something in your quarantine and after 2 week you have no reason to believe that there is a reason for it to continue to be in there you can add it to your display tank. Basically it is your judgment call.

Chris just told me the other day on the phone that the life cycle of a Pyramid snail is usually 120 days. So we'll see on these two clams.

The blue Maxima I have I never noticed the Pyramid snails until I was about to place it in the display tank. That was about 3 weeks after I purchased it.
