skimmer guru's....

Postby msbeanctr » Thu Jul 02, 2009 12:24 pm

I have two skimmers.....an ASM G3 for the 72 gallon bowfront and an octopus 150 for my 40 gallon tank.

My preference is for the octopus because 1-it's much quieter than the asm and 2- the cup is so much easier to empty...

I am breaking down my smaller tank and I'm wondering if the octopus 150 will be big enough to handle my 72 gallon bowfront or if I should just suck it up and deal with the asm?

Suggestions/Comments???

What version of the octo 150 do you have? If its the oldest one its pulling 5scfh of air which imo isn't enough for a 72g tank. If you made a different venturi on it you'll get around 15scfh. Then you will be good. For a 75g tank your going to need around 400-500lph air to handle a good bioload in there. 5scfh = 141lph, 15 = 425lph. Aim for that.

I'll have to check when I get home......btw, thanks very much for your help guys. I'm not much on the hardware end of things. I'm totally stressing just over figuring out where to put my new koralias (sp?) in my bowfront tank.....let alone trying to figure out the skimmer issue....now, if you want me to figure out your taxes that's another story!

Of course I didn't keep the e-mail rats!!

I'm beginning to think that I just need to keep the asm in the 72 and let the octopus skimmer go.

Nuts! I think I'm gonna have to ask Santa for a mondo octopus skimmer for Christmas.

Thank you all very much for your help....it is greatly appreciated!

I'm sure you have the old one, original model. If i saw a pic i'd be able to tell you yea or nea. If you want to run the asm and send me your pump i'll mod it up and send it back. I have the stuff to fix it up here. Just pay for the shipping back. I can get that pump to pull 3-4x's the air which would make it handle that tank easily. Does it look like this?

Wow....you are so kind to make that offer....

it looks very similar to the one in the picture except the collection cup is designed a little different.

I guess I'll keep the asm in the 72 gallon and give the octopus to skinz (because I'm nice but please don't spread it around!).

But now you have my interest....I've heard of 'mods' done to skimmers....pardon my ignorance but I have to ask....a 'mod' will increase air flow on skimmers therefore making them more effective?

In simple terms, the air bonds with the doc's in the water column, so if you are getting 150lph now and you mod it to pull 450lph air pull it will have the ability to bond with three times the amount of doc's as before.

Hey Carol I just saw this thread, ask me when I come over about the Koralia's and I will see what I think you need to do for positioning them.

Luke is the skimmer guru. If you want to get a different skimmer for your 72 he can hook you up

There are some mods that can be done on your skimmer though. I'll take a look at it when I come over.
